THE INITIAL CHALLENGE
One of the hardest things for me when I started my own business was to select an ideal client. In all the business building classes and books and podcasts and mentors and messages said “who is your ideal client?” but I was worried if I narrowed it down, I was narrowing the pool of people who would hire me, and few to no people hiring me, that was a scary prospect. I can work for anyone! I want to work with anyone! My topic (Influential Leadership through effective communication, emotional intelligence and dealing with the discomforts of change) is universal! Why would I narrow down the possibility of who I work with. Without a thick calendar of client engagements, I would be an idiot to do anything that would discourage someone to hire me. “There’s only so much business available. You’d better grab as much of it as possible” was my thinking.
Over 5 years into my speaking business, clients were pouring in (ok, pouring may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I had a bunch) and on the perfectly right day in the perfectly right place, someone again asked the dreaded question at a business breakthrough retreat I was attending. “Who is your ideal client?”
I think it was the follow up questions that created the beam of light and heavenly angels singing hymns of hallelujah as it suddenly click for me. “Who do you love working with? Who do you really connect with? Who energizes you and makes you feel like you really made a difference for them?”
I stood up and exclaimed, “I LOVE WORKING WITH FIRED UP FEMALE LEADERS WHO ARE READY TO LOOK INSIDE THEMSELVES AND DISCOVER NEW WAYS TO AMP UP THEIR INFLUENCE AND GET THE RESULTS THEY WANT FROM THE PEOPLE THEY WORK AND LIVE WITH TO IMPROVE THEIR CAREERS AND THEIR LIVES!”
(Thank goodness it was a virtual retreat and I was alone in the room with my mic on mute, because that would have been kind of rude had I done that in a room full of people!)
I hadn’t allowed myself to admit that. Does it mean I don’t like men? Absolutely not! I like them very much in fact!
I had been told by one speaking mentor not to go for the women, that I would just get them just by being a strong female speaker, to go for more. I had thought that going for the women was the easy route, and I should challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone.
But if the comfort zone works…ummmmm…why would I leave it? Seriously! I’m all about getting out of the comfort zone, but we have more than one comfort zone. We have them all over their lives, and you don’t have to get out of every single comfort zone all at the same time! If a comfort zone is working (like my current romantic relationship, my chosen profession, and my morning routine) then let’s leave the change discomfort to the places where it will make a difference. (Getting better at making sales calls, writing my third book, and learning my new CRM to mention just a few!)
And if I’m great at connecting with the fired up female leaders, and I can more easily energize, inspire and help them create transformation in their lives, can’t I make so much more of a difference diving deep into my strengths rather than flogging my weaker connection points to try to make something work that doesn’t bring me as much ease???
“It doesn’t have to be hard.”
OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! There’s so much of what my friend Paul Artale calls “hustle porn” out there, that we constantly feel like it has to be hard. But isn’t it hard enough? Do we have to make everything hard? I'm all about hard work, but when the alignment is there, the hard work doesn't feel like as much of a struggle.
Plus, with 7.6 billion people on the planet, there are about 3.8-ish billion women, and around 1.5 billion women in the age category I’m targeting (25-50) and about 43 million of those women are in the United States alone. That’s more than I can handle for now, so why not put a stake in the ground.
THE STAKE IN THE GROUND
So here I am, finally identifying my ideal client, and it feels great! I’m shifting my podcast focus for her, I’m creating Influence Transformation Retreats for her (an idea I’ve been kicking around my brain for years, but I couldn’t quite make it fit!)

- I work with women who love to have fun and laugh while getting some serious sh*t done!
- I work with women who are strong enough to recognize their weaknesses because they know that by recognizing them, they can strengthen them.
- I work with women who have an open mind to new ideas and ways of thinking.
- I work with women who love to connect with other women to support and strengthen and learn and grow through solution rather than blame-focused problem solving.
