The hardest thing about change is the unknowns.
So, here's the thing: I was thinking about change, and how often when things change, there's no clear, paved path to follow. It's dark and unknown and foggy and twisty and scary! But you know what? That doesn't mean we can't proceed and have a blast along the way!
In 2009 I went to Berlin to run the marathon. (I'm on a quest to run a marathon on every continent, and that was my European one.) I couldn't find anyone to go with, so I went by myself.
I wandered the streets with no map. I found a really cool flea market and got a very unique souvenir. (That wouldn't have been on a map). I ate banana Nutella crepes (YUM!) from street vendors. I got lost and admired murals on buildings, interesting people enjoying the park on a sunny day, and eventually found my way back to my hotel.
Have you ever wandered like that? Where you've got to rely on your sense of adventure (and maybe a little bit of intuition) to find your way? For me, those always turn out to be the most memorable and exciting adventures! You laugh at your wrong turns, marveled at the stunning views and surprise finds, and create amazing memories of forging your own path.
Well, I say we bring that same spirit to change. Sure, we may not have a step-by-step roadmap, and that can be scary at times, but we've got so many internal and external resources to figure it out. Call in your network, use technology, recall successes you've had in the past...and embrace the unknown with open arms.
Who knows where our unconventional path may lead us? But one thing's for sure: we'll have an amazing time making memories, trying new things, learning, building more confidence and becoming a stronger, more resilient human!!
Cheers to embracing the unknown and having a blast along the way! And if you need more tips on Embracing the Discomfort of Change, there's a great book on Amazon just for you! (I wrote it! Ha ha ha.) Click here to check it out.
