I’ve always bragged that the Egg McMuffin and I have a special connection.
We were both born in 1973!
I recently learned that The Bahamas became independent in 1973 as well!
And the National Speakers Association, the main U.S. association for professional speakers like me was also founded in 1973!
So much magic in one year? YES!
So I celebrated my 50th birthday this past weekend, but come on…when you hit 50, you celebrate all year!
- I moved to new home in St Pete just before my 50th year began
- I summitted Kilimanjaro right as 2023 began
- I took my niece to Costa Rica, and we celebrated during her first international adventure
- I celebrated with my dad on a 129-mile bike ride on the Katy Trail in Missouri (50 miles for me and 79 for him!)
- I was awarded my Certified Speaking Professional® designation at this year’s 50th-anniversary celebration of the NSA. (more on that in another e-mail!)
- I gave up all control and was taken on a glorious surprise birthday trip down to the FL Keys
- I’m looking forward to birthday celebration shenanigans with my family up in Michigan in August
- I’m celebrating by running a half marathon with my long-time running buddy Laurie in September
And I’m sure I’ll come up with some other celebratory shenanigans to get into as 2023 comes to a close!
And every time I look in the mirror and I’m not as firm and lean and perky and youthful looking as I used to be, I remind myself to focus on what I can control! I’ve been celebrating my life the way I have this year for 50 years! (ok, I didn’t start the hard-core adventures until 1975…but you know what I mean!) I earned this age and this wisdom and these wrinkles. (and yes…the gray hair that’s under this very realistic red hair!)
It is what it is, so I’m going to get out there and enjoy it. I plan for the next 50 years to be as productive, joyful and fun as the first were. I’ll probably have to eat more veggies, drink fewer Bahama Mamas and take a few more naps than I did before, but that’s ok! It is what it is!! I’m going to start from reality and take it from there.

P.S. I just fact checked my 1973 Egg McMuffin claim…and my whole world just shattered! The Egg McMagic was introduced in 1972 and rolled out nation-wide in 1975…but I’m sure the tipping point of Egg McMagnificence happened in 1973…maybe at 10:37pm on July 31 when a fat little blonde firecracker came screaming into this world! It could happen!
