Mid-Week Energizer : Waiting and Worrying? Try this.

I’m sitting on the runway in Milwaukee, waiting to get gas in our plane so we can go to our original destination (Chicago where there’s a big storm) and I realized I hadn’t written to you in months!
How have you been?
Has it been one heck of a year for you too?  ! I had a busy spring of traveling for speaking and emcee engagements while juggling a few big life events…

In February my doctor found a cantaloupe sized mass in my abdomen. (I named her Jellyroll!  The mass, not the doctor!)

In March I found a house I wanted to buy.

In April the doc went in and got my guts all straightened out (nothing lasting or scary in there!  Fshew!)

In May I closed on my house (but still couldn’t lift anything for another month…thank goodness for strong movers and good friends!)

In all this time, as with right now waiting for mother nature and air traffic control to release it’s iron grip, there has been a lot of uncertainty and a lot of “wait and see”.  As someone who enjoys having a plan and being able to take action, I’ve learned many important lessons in patience and letting things develop in their own time.
It’s hard.  I didn’t enjoy it.  I was dancing in the discomfort zone for sure!
Here’s what I learned.
In those stressful moments when I started to get frothy with worry, I would ask myself,
“Can I do anything about this right now?”
Usually the answer was no, at which point I would say “ok, what else can I do to get my mind off this.”Go read a book

Go for a walk (or go to the boxing gym!)

Bake something

Watch a show

Call a friend/family member

Do a craft (I did a lot of paint by number!)

Do ANYTHING to get my mind off of the thing that was concerning me that in that moment I couldn’t do anything about, and worrying wasn’t doing any good.  (it usually doesn’t!)

When it was time to take action, I took action.  The rest of the time, I distracted myself as best I could.
It’s a dumb little strategy, but in those times when you’re spinning out with concern, worrying doesn’t do any good, and can make you sick(er)!  So find something to get your mind off the concern.  Give it a shot sometime.
Good luck, and I’ll tell you more about this year’s adventures soon.
Go get ’em Tiger!
